Horrors!
Some high-end hotels have said they are removing Gideon Bibles from their rooms because patrons favor more 21st-century amenities like condoms, wireless Internet and flat-screen TVs.
Oh my. My Baptist great-grandmother who witnessed to her neighborhood and toted a Bible she could not read would shudder. But I'm not blushing. Piety for our Lord is not demonstrated in self-righteous disdain, but in our willingness to reach out to our world. Lovingly. Truthfully. Realistically.
God inspired the idea for placing Bibles in hotel rooms and He hasn't run out of ideas yet on how to lovingly reach contemporary culture, even though people may prefer condoms to the cross.
Just as Gideon Bibles, the Four Spiritual Laws and other evangelistic tools have touched generations (I was saved in college after someone witnessed to me with the Four Spiritual Laws booklet), it's time for Christians to petition the Most High for more strategic, creative, Spirit-led methods.
I believe He wants to share His intentions with His sons and daughters. Maybe He will meet us like the angel of the Lord did the biblical hero Gideon under the oak tree in Ophrah, opening our understanding and explaining great purpose during the ordinary moments of life.
